When it comes to securing home and small business networks, the stakes are higher than ever. A single misconfiguration can expose sensitive data, slow down your connection, or even allow an attacker to pivot into critical systems. Based on real-world experience, here’s a practical guide to hardening your network without needing a dedicated IT team.
Segment Your Network with VLANs (or at Least a Guest Wi-Fi)
The biggest mistake I see is flat networks where a compromised IoT device can talk directly to a laptop with financial data. If your router supports VLANs, create at least two: one for trusted devices (computers, phones) and one for untrusted devices (smart lights, cameras, printers). On a typical small business setup using a managed switch and OpenWrt router, you can isolate the guest network with a simple firewall rule:

If VLANs are overkill, at least enable the guest Wi-Fi feature on your access point. Most consumer routers offer this in the wireless settings—turn it on and keep it on.

This sounds obvious, but I still see routers with admin:admin in the field. Change the router’s admin password to a strong, unique passphrase. Then, disable remote administration (WAN-side access). On a typical TP-Link or MikroTik device, this is under “Administration” or “Services.” For Linux-based routers, ensure SSH is password-only and disable root login:

Then restart SSH: systemctl restart sshd. For small businesses, consider using SSH keys instead of passwords—they’re far more secure.
Use a DNS Filter to Block Malware and Tracking
A lightweight but powerful step is to change your router’s DNS to a filtering service. This blocks malicious domains before they even reach your network. I recommend NextDNS or Cloudflare’s 1.1.1.2 (which blocks malware). On most routers, go to WAN settings and set custom DNS servers:
Preferred DNS: 1.1.1.2
Alternate DNS: 1.0.0.2
For more control, NextDNS lets you create custom blocklists and view logs. On OpenWrt, install https-dns-proxy and point it to your NextDNS resolver—this also prevents DNS leaks.
Keep Firmware and Software Updated Automatically
Outdated firmware is the number one entry point for exploits. Enable automatic updates on your router if available. For small business networks, schedule a weekly reboot during off-hours to apply updates cleanly. On Linux-based routers (like pfSense or OPNsense), you can automate updates via cron:

Also, apply the same discipline to end devices—enable auto-updates on Windows, macOS, and Android. For Linux workstations, set up unattended-upgrades.
